Optimizing Cow Size and Efficiency to Maximize Profitability

چکیده
Over the years, a number of studies have evaluated the concept of size and profitability. Thanks to the efforts of researchers conducting these studies, it should be easier to determine an answer that may best fit a given farm or ranch environmental and economic conditions. In it simplest form, it can be generalized that size is usually related to production, but more resources are needed to maintain larger sizes. In its most complex form, larger size may mean more production on the hooves of a weaned calf, but less production/unit area. Or, more resources available (such as crop byproducts) can mean more pounds of TDN, or more pounds of feed, but feed may be sufficiently inexpensive to permit greater production at a lower price. Added to these confounding factors is the need to produce calves that will be sought by feeders for their potential acceptability as beef for today's consumers.

Dairy Cow Responses to Sources and Amounts of Supplemental Protein
Underfeeding or overfeeding CP to dairy cows can have detrimental effects on milk production, efficiency of nutrient utilization, reproduction, the environment, and the overall profitability of the dairy operation. Therefore, the amount and source of CP to feed must be determined if we are to optimize productivity, maximize nutrient utilization, avoid polluting the environment, and increase pro...

Production data from 11 southeastern Montana ranches were used to parameterize a bio-economic computer model of cow/calf range production. Effects of changes in breeding date, weaning date, and range removal date on system performance for a ranch with a fixed forage resource base (3,060 animal unit months of range forage and 744 t of hay) were simulated. Input costs were locally established in ...
متن کاملFactors Affecting Feed Efficiency of Dairy Cows
Feed efficiency (FE) is a concept that has gained popularity in recent years in the dairy industry. Monitoring FE is becoming a more common benchmark for monitoring the profitability of milk production relative to dry matter (DM) intake. In today’s markets, feeds and commodities are becoming more costly, which is driving the requirement for more efficient utilization to maintain profitability. ...
متن کاملThe rumen and beyond: Nutritional physiology of the modern dairy cow.
Feed efficiency, as defined by the fraction of feed energy captured in products, has more than doubled for the US dairy industry in the past 100 years. This increased feed efficiency resulted from increased milk production per cow achieved through genetics, nutrition, and management with the desired goal being greater profitability. With increased milk production per cow, more feed is consumed ...
متن کاملRelationship of Cow Size, Cow Requirements, and Production Issues
Introduction Proper nutritional status is critical for optimal production efficiency in the beef cow herd. Meeting the nutrient requirements of the productive cow is a prime factor in the cow’s reproductive success and overall herd profitability. However, beef producers often take a “one size fits all” approach to feeding the cows in the cow herd. This singular approach to nutrient supply for t...
